One of the first things you will notice upon arrival in Rennes is that it is well-preserved, with countless examples of architecture from the 16th Century on. Architecture is a testimony to its historical role as Capital of Brittany, a role that goes back to pre-Roman times.
Rennes has three museums, each definitely worth a visit. Musee des Beaux Arts, Musee de Bretagne and the Ecomusee du Pays de Rennes. A pass for all three museums is available, contact the museums for the latest price.
And although its roots go back to the dawn of times, Rennes is still a young and lively city. It's a student twon and as a consequence, a vibrant nightlife is on offer. The man area of the nightlife/bar culture here is centered in the older area to the north of the cathedral on two roads, rue St Michel, and rue St Malo. This is not to say that this is the only area, it is just that these two roads and the area between them have the highest concentration of bars (maybe in the world !). For quieter areas and restaurants take a look around the old quartier around the cathedral and also rue st Georges, near the parliament. See the Food section.
Rennes is about 580 000 inhabitants in the great urban area. 60 km far from Rennes is St Malo, a beautiful fortified town at the sea La Manche.
