 Vatican Museums

Ok, so the queues and the crowds are terrible, but this was singlehandedly the most amazing museum i've ever been to. The map rooms and of course the Sistine Chapel were the best bits for me.

You know, I think I could stay here forever, looking at St Peters, seeing nuns scurrying by and generally enjoying the atmosphere in this beautiful setting. I love it!

I went to Rome with my sister and when we got to this area I though it looked a bit like a dumping ground for roman architecture. She pointed out loads of things like temples and basilicas and really brought the place to life!

The gardens here are a little oasis of quiet and shade right in the centre so head here if you feel like the crowds and pounding the pavement are getting you down. You can even indulge in a little sightseeing once you have recuperated with a visit to the Museo Carlo Bilotti, a comntemporary art muse ... more

I wanted to get off the tourist circuit on my holiday in Rome, so my hubby and me headed for this hill. We saw the amazing paintings of the houses that stood here (and still do, just underground), and had a relaxing lunch in the stunning Villa Celimontana gardens.

dealchecker's guide to Rome

Once called the 'Capital of the World', Rome is the capital of Italy and home to the Vatican City. Often called 'The Eternal City', Rome has a myriad of historical and cultural features dating back to the days of the Roman Empire as well as stunning examples of medieval and Renaissance architecture. As with most cities, it also features a vibrant mix of modern life including the fashion, music of many types, huge shopping areas and world class restaurants.

Choosing a Rome Hotel

The city receives in excess of 42 million visitors every year and Rome holidays are popular with many different people who visit for a variety of different reasons. There is a diverse range of accommodation available which varies from cheap hotels in Rome suburbs, popular with those backpacking across Europe, through to the most sumptuous and unique luxury Rome hotels favoured by many wealthy and famous guests.

When to visit Rome

The city has two main airports, Leonardo da Vinci and Ciampino, the latter being the more common destination for cheap flights to Rome. The city is busy and popular throughout the year and it is mainly the climate which has a bearing on the choice of when to visit. Spring and autumn are the busiest times, when the city is packed with tourists, with the winter months not following far behind. During July and August the city is much quieter, due mainly to the stifling heat, so this is the time for a budget break when cheap hotels in Rome are most likely to be available.
