dealchecker's guide to Grenada

The capital of Grenada is an attractive place and it is well worth your while to drag yourself away from the beach for a couple of days.

Fort George is the main attraction of the city. It gives you excellent views over the area, especially the horse shoe shaped Carenage with its "Christ of Deep Statue" and the Cruise ship terminal.

At the foot of the fort you find a maze of small streets lined with small shops. For more shopping, head for the Market Square in the centre.

For history buffs the Grenada National Museum is worth a visit as is Fort Frederick up on Richmond Hill.

An unusual attraction is the traffic policeman on a platform where Scott Street meets Lucas Street. The Anglican Church dating from 1825, the Cathedral from 1818 and St. Andrews Presbitery from 1830 give lovers of religious architecture something to choose from.

For a rest head for the botanical gardens, founded in 1887 and considered a national treasure. The gardens are just behind the roundabout where Lowthers Lane, Tantee Road and Paddock Road meet.
