dealchecker’s guide to Taipei

The area in which Taipei is now located was once a lake which was full of swamps and grassy lowlands, but a lot has changed now. Back then only aboriginal tribes lived there. T the Chinese eventually came to fish and to do business. Chen Lai-chang established a farm in central Taipei . The numbers of immigrants to Taipei began to increase. The most concentrated area of settlement was at the rivers. Taipei is a city that developed around a river culture. Taipei was essentially divided among immigrants from different areas of China . This resulted in many conflicts. Taipei was first built like a rectangle shape with four main walls on the east and west. The city faces from north to south, and its main axis points towards the North Star. Financial agencies were kept in between the walls. The Japanese colonized Taiwan in 1895, and they continued to develop the city. It eventually became the administrative, economic, and cultural center of Taiwan .

The city of Taipei is located in northern Taiwan . It is located in the Taipei Basin . To the south of Taipei borders the Sindian River a nd the west of Taipei borders the Danshui River . The northern districts of Taipei extend north to the Keelung River and borders Taipei s famous Yangmingshan National Park . Since the city is surrounded by mountains the city commonly experiences high humidity and temperatures during summer.   This problem is worsening by the enormous population of about 2.6 million people. The massive population also makes transportation difficult. The city is in the process of advancing its transportation by building a railway system. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is a railway that uses both a light rail system based on VAL an automatic train. The railway way system follows the Japanese. In Japan the trains running on the left, while the Taipei public transport system runs its trains on the right.

The climate of Taipei is subtropical. Taipei is the center of industry, government, and culture of Taiwan. The major industries in Taipei are electrical and electronic equipment, textiles, metals, shipbuilding, and motorcycles. The current government of Taipei is the Kuomintang (KMT) government. The current governor of Taipei is Ma Ying-jeou. The Kuomintang is also known as the Nationalist Party of China. The Kuomintang is a conservative party in Taipei. The Kuomintang and another party called the Peoples first party from the pan-blue alliance. Pan-blue alliance means that they want reunification with China. The opposition of Kuomintang is the Democratic Progressive Party, which is a part of the pan-green alliance. The pan-green alliance wants independence from Taiwan.

Living in Taipei is like living in a major city. There is pollution, traffic and it is very noisy. It is also very expensive to live there, bad weather and water shortages. Taipei is however cleaner, safer, convenient, and better run than most cities in Taiwan. The positives for living in Taiwan are that you can buy almost anything you want there and have a large selection of different kinds of food.
