Chicago
Travel to Chicago
All the major airports across the UK, as well as some of the regional ones, offer flights to Chicago. The flight takes around eight hours and the majority of flights land at O'Hare International Airport (ORD), although some may land at Chicago Midway International Airport (CHI) which is at the opposite end of Chicago so be sure to check before you book!

On arrival in Chicago
The easiest way to the heart of downtown Chicago from either airport is by train, with direct regular routes, low prices and a transit time of under half an hour. Some local buses also serve O'Hare Airport. For larger groups or for an easy time when you arrive, there are companies that offer shuttle buses you can pre-book, or there are always taxis and car hire available too. Many hotels offer free shuttle buses too so check when you book.
Getting around Chicago
Chicago has an excellent public transport system with the Chicago Transit Authority trains and buses operating a regular and fairly comprehensive network in the centre. This is operated on a rechargeable card system similar to the Oyster in London. Further out the regional system of trains and buses takes over. Driving is not advised if you're in central areas as traffic is terrible and parking is really expensive. If you need to drive somewhere a taxi may work out cheaper, as Chicago has some of the cheapest fares in the country, and certainly easier! Water taxis and bicycle paths are great for seeing the city at a slower pace.

Travelling further afield
With two airports it's hardly surprising that regional flights are popular with those looking to see more than one city on their holiday. For a cheaper alternative, the iconic greyhound coaches or other intercity buses are a great way to get around the USA. Chicago is also conveniently located on the national rail network, with services to California, New York, Washington and Seattle amongst others. To explore the surrounding area of Chicago hiring a car is a good option, as it gives you freedom, and once outside the centre the traffic is fine.
