You can catch direct flights to Crete from an excellent variety of airports across the UK from Belfast to Cardiff to Norwich, and there are some low-cost airlines who fly the route which means that great deals are possible, particularly with flexible travel dates. Crete has three airports across the island, Heraklion, Chania and Sitia. It's also possible to get internal flights from Athens, or a ferry across from Piraeus and Thessaloniki.
Heraklion airport is the only one reachable by public transport, with a regular shuttle bus from the town. The other options are taxi or Crete car hire depending on how much travel you wish to do during your trip. Ports have taxi ranks and are generally served by some local bus routes as well.
In addition to the bus services in towns, the bus network across the island is pretty good, with routes running regularly and drivers willing to take a detour and drop people in small villages along the route. Another great way to get around is by ferry, especially along the south coast where there are few roads. For freedom and easy travel hiring a car is a great option too.
Ferries or flights across to Greece are a great way of seeing more or extending your holiday!
