Official currency is the Dominican Pesos. You will be able to change US dollars or Euros into Dominican Pesos at either of the international airports and be sure to change it back before you leave. US dollars, traveller's cheques and major credit cards are widely accepted. ATMS are available in the major resorts and towns.

You can eat for less than $8 if you don't mind cafe's or fast food options but there are plenty of mid-high range options for eating, drinking and sleeping too so it really depends on your budget.
Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory and many services include a 10% services charge on the bill.
Local Customs
Dominicans are well known for their helpful nature and so are welcoming if you need to stop them to ask for help/directions.
Safety
Dominican Republic does not experience the same level of poverty as neighbouring Haiti however it would be careless not to take precautions when you are out, especially late at night. Do not flash expensive possessions around and keep passports and valuables in a safe in the hotel. Drug laws are pretty severe so it is not advised to meddle with drugs while staying on the island.
Health:
The Dominican Republic occupies two thirds of the island of Hispaniola; the remaining third makes up the nation of Haiti which suffered a devastating earthquake in January 2010 and has since seen limited economic growth and poverty. No specific vaccinations are required but it is strongly recommended that you purchase travel insurance prior to beginning your holiday. Travellers may find they are more susceptible to stomach bugs and sun-related fevers so be sensible; drink bottled water and ensure you have adequate suncream and take time to sit in the shade.
Entry:
British citizens are required to present a valid passport and purchase a tourist card on arrival costing $10 and which must be paid in USD or Euros. There is also a departure tax of $20. The tourist card entitles you to stay for up to 60 days but you must have a valid passport and proof of return/onward travel.
