Transport in

Dominican Republic

Travel to Dominican Republic

There are a number of smaller airports on the island, but the main airports are Punta Cana International or Las Americas International Airport in Santo Domingo, just 30 minutes from the city centre. The airport is served by a number of major airlines and there is also a ferry service to the capital Santo Domingo from Mayaguez or San Juan, Puerto Rico.

On arrival in Dominican Republic

The airport is an easy place to pick up car hire in the Dominican Republic or grab a taxi to your destination. Look out for taxi drivers with their license around their neck and be careful not to get in an unlicensed taxi.

Getting around Dominican Republic

The capital of Santo Domingo is easy to navigate and see the sights located in the Distrito Nacional. Getting around by foot can be quite difficult in the city centre so it is recommended that you invest in a street map. Unlike most other countries, roaming taxis are not very abundant and the bus service is geared towards locals more than tourists. Hiring a car is easy but the roads are often poorly lit and not all in great condition so do take care when driving, especially at night.

Some local buses that may be suitable for tourists are the Guagas - the more traditional means of transport. They are more of an experience than a relaxing mode of transport as you might find yourself packed in around people and luggage. They are certainly the cheapest way to travel.

Travelling further afield

Longer journeys can also be taken by bus but a more luxurious form of transport in comparison to the Guagas. The long haul buses are clean and have air conditioning and are value for money if you are wanting to travel around the Dominican Republic on your holiday.
