The island of Gozo, part of the Maltese archipelago, may be small but you'll find there's still plenty to do during a holiday in Gozo. Unspoilt countryside, sleepy villages, beautiful churches and Ggantija temples will keep sightseers busy, while scuba divers will be impressed with the excellent dive sites on offer such as the Blue Hole. The capital Rabat is home to a magnificent Citadella offering 360 degree views of the pretty city, while Ramla il-Ħamra beach with its reddish sand is the perfect spot to relax.
To get to Gozo you'll need to fly to Luqa Malta International airport. Cheap flights to Malta are available from most UK airports including London, Bristol and Manchester with budget airline Ryanair. Flights take less than three and a half hours. From Malta you can take a ferry from Ċirkewwa to Gozo's main harbour, Mġarr. Ferries are cheap and very frequent departing every 45 minutes during the summer months and around every hour during other times. Buses greet arriving ferries and the trip to Rabat takes 20 minutes.
Buses are a great way to explore the island and although rather slow, they are cheap and connect most villages and towns. Taxis are also available but can be known to charge tourists as much as they can get away with so ensure you negotiate hard if you plan on taking one! Alternately, hiring a car is a great way of exploring Gozo.
You can find cheap hotels in Malta and in Gozo, and Gozo hotels tend to be slightly cheaper. Shop around online to get the best deals and make sure you book in advance especially if you are travelling during the busy months of July and August. June and September are excellent months to holiday in Gozo, it's still lovely and warm, there are fewer crowds and accommodation is cheaper.
You don't have to spend a fortune during your Gozo holiday as there are plenty of activities on offer that won't cost a penny. Walking and hiking are a great way of seeing the scenic island while meandering around the towns and villages will offer plenty of sights for the eyes to feast on. If you're planning on a day out, consider packing a picnic and pick up a bottle of the unlabeled local wine. It's cheap and tasty!
