With 11 hours of sunshine a day in high season a Greece holiday is the perfect way to get away from it all. A visit to the capital city of Athens isn't complete without a trip to the stunning temple of Parthenon, built thousands of years ago. Olympia, the site of the first Olympics, is something not to be missed, and neither is the island of Crete, the birthplace of the legendary King Minos. Faliraki, on the island of Rhodes, is party animal central but if you're more into relaxation than head to the picturesque island of Santorini instead.
Budget airlines Ryanair and easyJet both offer frequent and cheap flights to Greece making it the perfect place to visit if you're on a budget. With the likes of Monarch, Flythomascook and Thomson Flights also offering direct flights to the country, you'll never be short of routes to choose from. Make sure you shop around to get the best deal. However if you're looking to explore the smaller islands during your holiday in Greece you may have to take indirect flights. Athens Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is located about 27 kilometres east of the city centre.
Greece has a brilliant, inexpensive bus service with even the smallest towns on the network - you'll have no trouble getting around during your holiday in Greece. But sometimes the ancient ruins aren't always on the bus route. Looking into car hire in Greece is a great idea if you wish to visit the more rural areas of the country. Just make sure you book in advance to ensure that you get a good deal as it can be expensive!
Going on holiday to Greece doesn't have to be tough on your bank account as it's possible to get a good deal on a cheap hotel in Greece if you book well in advance. With such a large array of different hotels in the country, you'll be sure to find one that suits your budget. Holidays in Greece can be very expensive during the school holidays so it's better to book outside these peak times if you can – you'll get a lot more for your money!
One thing Greece isn't short of is beautiful beaches. Instead of paying extortionate prices at the beach front cafes why not take a trip to the local supermarket and create your own picnic instead. This way you get to sample some local delights too! When in the local tavernas, make sure you try the famous Greek salad, which doesn't cost too much and tastes so much better than versions made here, and tzatziki, a Greek dip made of strained yogurt, olive oil, garlic, finely chopped cucumbers and dill or mint.
