Hot Spots

Attica

At the heart of the region of Attica lies Athens. Although the Greek capital tends to take all the attention, if you look further afield you'll find the Cape of Sounion and the Temple of Apollo, the Temple of Artemis at Vavrona as well as a whole host of little-known archaeological sites and sweeping countryside to discover. Athens itself boasts many attractions from the Parthenon and the National Archaeology Museum to the Roman Forum and the National Gardens.

Crete

Crete is the largest of the Greek islands, and the most popular holiday destination with Greeks and tourists alike. Crete's northern shore is home to all the resorts whilst the southern half remains more undiscovered. Highlights here include Samaria National Park, the ruins of Knossos and the beautiful palm-lined beach of Vai. For more information why visit our Crete holidays page.

The Greek Islands

The sheer number of Greek islands can be bewildering when choosing a holiday destination and most people tend to favour the most popular, and easy to access, heading to the sophisticated party island of Mykonos, the family-friendly Corfu, Rhodes which offers both wild nights and quiet days, or Zakynthos (Zante) featuring something for everyone. But if you're after something a little different you could try partying in Ios, walking in beautiful Kefalonia or holidaying in luxury in Santorini.

Central and Northern Greece

Though its often neglected by foreign tourists, this region has long been popular with the Greeks. As well as plenty of ancient sites to visit there's great hiking spots aplenty from the easy hills of the PĂlion peninsula to the more challenging slopes of the Pindos mountains of Epirus. Gorgeous beaches can be found on the Halkidiki peninsula, they get very busy in summer and the Vourvourou lagoon is a better bet if you're after peace and quiet. Last but not least, Mount Olympus also awaits, home to the mythological Greek Gods.

The Pelopponese

In the Pelopponese archaeological sites dominate the list of things to do. The ancient cities of Mycenae, Epidaurus and Sparta are the area's most famous sights, but there's plenty more besides. Olympia holds the site of the first Olympics and beaches of the peninsula are popular with locals, drawing crowds from Athens most summer weekends. The pretty hillside port town of Nafpilon is a real gem worth visiting. Wine-making is the typical trade of the area and ouzo is also popular so there's plenty of good drinking to be done on your holidays here!
