Ireland
Travel to Ireland
It's pretty easy to fly into all the major cities in Ireland from across the UK (or just to drive across the border in the case of Northern Ireland) and there are some pretty great deals on flights too so you can easily grab a bargain. Alternatively, you can take the ferry across from Holyhead, Swansea, Pembroke or Liverpool, with train companies often offering a combined deal to help you get there as cheaply as possible.
On arrival in Ireland
The Irish airports are all served by bus routes as well as the obligatory taxis, and car hire is always available at the airport. Some airports are also served by a train line. If you're staying in a town the public transport is likely to be sufficient to get you to your accommodation, but if you're heading out into the countryside then hiring a car will give you some freedom.
Getting around Ireland
Dublin is the hub for train travel, so although all the main towns and cities are covered by the rail network you may have to go via Dublin to get to your destination. Family tickets are great value but aren't available online so be sure to check at the train station. There is also a comprehensive intercity bus network, ideal if you want to visit more than one of the cities on the Emerald Isle. For slower and more sedate travel the internal canals are a great way to see more, and boat tours of the coast are available too. However, many people who want to see the numerous national parks or head off the some of the coastal attractions will find that hiring a car in Ireland is certainly the best way to go.
