Travel to Italy

There's much more to Italy than pasta and pizza, although the food is to die for! With so many striking cities to visit during your Italy holiday you'll be spoilt for choice. Take a gondola through the romantic city of Venice or visit the fashion capital of Milan and admire Da Vinci's Last Supper. If you take a trip to Rome it's a scandal if you miss out the Vatican City. The cultural city of Florence is perfect for Renaissance lovers and the medieval centre of Bologna is beautiful. Make sure you don't forget the stunning region of Tuscany!

A variety of flights to Italy are available from all major UK airports and with an average journey time of between two to three hours - depending on where in the country you're flying from - it's an easy distance for a city break. The only problem is choosing what city to visit first! Ryanair, British Airways, easyJet, Monarch and Thomson Flights are just a few who fly into a wide range of Italian airports all over the country

It's fairly easy to travel around during your holiday in Italy by bus. For tourists its recommended that you purchase daily tickets for the bus service allowing you to travel as much as you like in a single day - perfect for a day filled with sightseeing.

One of the best ways to explore the beautiful country and get a taste of the real Italy is through driving. As long as you book well in advance you'll get a good deal on car hire in Italy Make sure you keep some change in the car as most motorways in Italy pay toll charges and beware of other drivers in Italy - they can be a bit erratic so city driving is not for the faint of heart!

Although Italy is known for being expensive it's possible to pick up a cheap hotel in Italy as long as you book well in advance. You're less likely to encounter crowds if you go from April to May or between September and October - the weather's still lovely and warm then too. Try to stay away from visiting Italy during the month of August as this is when many Italians take their summer holidays - lots of businesses and restaurants will be closed!

It can be expensive to eat out in the centre of most cities so instead keep an eye out for restaurants slightly off the beaten track. You'll get much more value for money! Gastronomia restaurants are a great option as they offer traditional Italian food for a reasonable price. It's similar to a self-service restaurant and you pay accordingly for what you have eaten.
