Situated in the Caribbean, the tropical country of Jamaica can be described as paradise. With a 10-mile shoreline it's no wonder that Montego Bay is one of the most popular places in Jamaica, but if you're looking for something a little quieter Port Antonio is the perfect place to indulge in some relaxation and, if you're up for it, deep-sea fishing. As the rumoured birthplace of Reggae, the capital city of Kingston has a buzzing nightlife - perfect for your inner party animal! And don't forget to check out the Bob Marley museum during your Jamaica holiday too.
Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Thomson Flights and Flythomascook all offer direct flights to Jamaica from London Gatwick, Manchester and Birmingham. It's possible to fly from other airports in the UK if you're willing to buy indirect flights - they can sometimes work out cheaper. The two airports on the island are the Norman Manley International Airport - less than 20 minutes away from the capital city - and the Donald Sangster International Airport which is located nearly five kilometres east of Montego Bay.
It's fairly cheap to travel around during your holiday in Jamaica - buses and local taxis are all inexpensive. The bus service is a great way to meet Jamaicans and get to know the country. The taxis look exactly like a local car so the trick is to look out for the colour of the licence plates - a red plate will let you know that the care is for transportation while a white plate lets you know that it's a private car. In order to pick one up simply stand at the side of the road and flag one down - you'll get a taxi in no time!
Just because Jamaica is based in the beautiful Caribbean doesn't mean it's not possible to get a cheap hotel in Jamaica - just make sure you book well in advance. In order to get cheap deals it's best to book between April and December as holidays to Jamaica are at their cheapest. However during June the Reggae Sumfest comes to town so Jamaica can get very busy - but if you can afford to go during this time it'll be a fun experience!
Try to stay away from pricey touristy restaurants and instead ask around and source out the locals favourites. The national dish is ackee (a fruit) and saltfish - and although ackee looks like scrambled egg it tastes nothing like it! It's a cheap dish that everyone must try during their holiday in Jamaica.
