Travel to Key West

Jetting off to Florida's Key West makes for the perfect family holiday. The city, on the island of the same name, is home to beautiful beaches boasting golden sands and warm, clear waters perfect for a day basking in the sun and swimming in the sea. There's also impressive diving to be had and the chance to swim with dolphins. As well as boasting plenty of interesting museums, the city also plays hosts to the Key West Nature Preserve where you can see local wildlife. Head to Key West Lighthouse for panoramic views of the island.

You can fly to Key West from a number of locations across the UK including London Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow International and Bristol with airlines such as British Airways, Air France and US Airways. Flights from the UK are indirect and land at Key West International Airport which is situated around five kilometres from the city centre.

To get your Key West holiday off to a swift and seamless start you can jump into a taxi at the airport to get to your Key West hotel in no time at all. A cheaper option for those on a tight budget is to take the local bus to the city centre. Buses depart from outside the departures area throughout the day and a single journey costs around $2. Alternatively, you may wish to hire a car in Key West which you can collect from the airport upon arrival – just be sure to shop around online to find the best price.

There are plenty of accommodation options in the city from small guesthouses to five star resort hotels. If you are on a budget and looking for cheap hotels in Key West it's a good idea to shop around online to compare prices. Just outside of the city you'll also find a number of campsites which offer a very economical way of staying on the island.

Key West is known for its delicious fresh seafood which is a must-try during any holiday in the city. Try to avoid the waterfront restaurants though as these are often much more expensive than those set back from the sea.

You won't have to spend a fortune getting around during your Key West holiday as must of the city can be explored on foot. If you do decide to hire a car you'll find this makes a pretty affordable way of exploring the rest of the island as the cost of taking taxis soon mounts up! The city is also home to a fairly extensive bus system and if you plan to make use of this service frequently it's a good idea to purchase a seven day ticket to keep costs down.
