Travel to Kuala Lumpur

With over 20 airports across the UK offering flights to Kuala Lumpur there is plenty of choice, which means that there will be deals to be had, provided you can be flexible on travel dates and departure point. Flights take between 12 and 14 hours depending on the route and whether you have a stopover.

On arrival in Kuala Lumpur

In addition to car hire and taxis, Kuala Lumpur International airport is served by several buses. The express shuttle bus is the fastest and the most expensive but the airport is also served by several local bus services. The fastest way into the city is the express train, which runs between the airport and KL Sentral station from early morning until late at night. If you do take a taxi beware that there are numerous unlicenced taxis that charge very high rates, the metered taxis are red and white but it's still best to agree a fee before getting in.

Getting around Kuala Lumpur

Dreadful driving conditions in Kuala Lumpur, particularly during the morning and evening rush hours, mean that public transport is a great way to beat the jams. Between the monorail, the central rail lines and the commuter lines to the suburbs it's possible to get almost anywhere in Kuala Lumpur. Although as all of these systems are run by different companies it's necessary to buy different tickets as you change. There is also a fairly comprehensive bus network, but buses are fairly infrequent so the KL tour bus may be a better option, especially if you're short on time. Taxis are of course readily available but will be significantly more expensive than the trains and buses.

Travelling further afield

Subang Airport, formerly the main airport serving Kuala Lumpur, is great for catching internal flights as it's really close to the city centre. There are also several companies offering long-distance coach travel to Singapore and other smaller destinations in the region. Intercity trains, often going under the name of 'platinum' or 'nice' serve a variety of destinations across the country.
