As the most popular tourist destination in Northern Cyprus, it's no wonder a holiday in Kyrenia ticks all the boxes. Brimming with ancient buildings, unspoilt stunning beaches and spectacular scenery, the harbour city of Kyrenia offers a lot to see and do. Head to the whitewashed Old Town during the day to explore the cobbled streets and hidden alleyways or at night as all the restaurants and tavernas open their doors to hungry diners.
As Northern Cyprus is not an internationally-recognised state, there are no direct flights there from the UK. Indirect flights, which get to Northern Cyprus via Turkey, take off from a number of UK airports including Birmingham, London and Newcastle. The gateway to your holiday in Kyrenia is Ercan International Airport, located around 35 kilometres from the centre of Kyrenia. The easiest way to get to your Kyrenia hotel is by taxi. Taxis are readily available outside the terminal building. Although the airport is served by a local bus which travels to Kyrenia, the service can be erratic and doesn't always run!
The best way to explore the area during your holiday to Kyrenia is by hiring a car - public transports isn't that extensive or reliable. Saying that, look out for buses saying Lapta Dolmuş as these run from the centre to Kyrenia's westcoast beaches and are very cheap.
As Kyrenia is quite small, accommodation books up quickly. In order to find cheap hotels in Kyrenia, book as far in advance as possible. You should also consider B&Bs, hostels and smaller guesthouses as these often offer the best value for money for those on a budget.
Check out the many markets during your holiday in Kyrenia for affordable foods and goods. There are many stalls selling fresh fruit, breads, cheeses and olives ? so it's easy to make up a tasty and cheap picnic for lunch. Others specialise in fake designer clothing which are sold at bargain basement prices ? shop around for the best deals as prices and quality differ considerably from stall to stall. It's not the custom to haggle in Kyrenia so the price you see if usually the price you pay.
Savvy tourists can enjoy a holiday in Kyrenia without breaking the bank. Avoid typical tourist-centric restaurants and head to some proper Turkish and Middle Eastern restaurants where you can gorge on tasty kebabs and mezze spreads at affordable prices
