If you want to visit one of the Baltic States, you should consider booking a holiday in Lithuania. The capital Vilnius is a beautiful city that attracts many tourists looking for a cheap break. The city boasts beautiful cobbled-stone squares, a grand cathedral and architecturally grand buildings including the Royal Palace. Kaunas is worth a visit to admire the historical buildings including the city's old castle, cathedral and the Old Town Hall. There are also a number of galleries, shops and bars to keep you busy. Palanga is a beautiful beach town with white-sandy beaches and still waters.
Flights to Lithuania from the UK arrive at one of three destinations; Kaunas, Vilnius and Palanga. You can fly from most locations in the UK into Kaunas or Vilnius with budget airline Ryanair. A flight to either destination will take you under three hours. You can also get additional direct flights into Vilnius with Wizz Air. If you're looking to visit the beach town of Palanga, you can pick up flights with carriers Air Baltic and SAS, but you will need to stop off on route as it isn't possible to fly direct from the UK.
All airports are an easy distance from the airports to get to. You can pick up a bus every ten to fifteen minutes to take you into Vilnius town centre from the airport. Buses from Palanga airport and Kaunas airport are less frequent with only one or two an hour. You can get taxis really easily from all three airports during your Lithuania holiday.
There are plenty of cheap hotels in Lithuania, so you won't have a problem finding somewhere to stay within your budget. If you are travelling in the summer months make sure you pre-book as demand in areas such as Palanga outnumber hotel rooms. However, if you are brave enough to travel without booking hotels in Lithuania, you may find you can rent a room above a café or persuade a local to let you stay at theirs homestays, as they are known, are quite common in Lithuania.
If you are looking for cheap bites during your Lithuania holiday try the spiced lamb filled turnovers called binai or the dough filled ceburekai filled with meat, cheese or apples.
Drinking alcohol is very affordable, try the local beers or Lithuania's cheap but high quality vodka Degtin. However, a word of warning, avoid the homemade brew Samane it is far too potent for most to consume.
