Travel to Maine

Think America's all about hustle and bustle? A holiday in Maine will change your mind. This majestic state is known for its lush green rural beauty (look out for the iconic Maine moose!). Fantastic canoeing can be found in the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, while the vistas and peaks of Acadia National Park will leave you gawping. Want to laze on a beach? Head to Crescent Beach State Park. And if you're hankering for some city adventures, Portland is the ideal destination, with its museums and picturesque Old Port shopping area.

There are many flights to the USA from the United Kingdom, and Maine is no exception. There are no direct flights to Maine, although you do have the option of various indirect flights to both Portland International Jetport and Bangor International Airport. Which you pick depends on what parts of the state you're likely to spend most of your Maine holiday in. KLM, Continental Airlines and Air Canada are among the airlines you can choose from.

Although there are extensive bus services throughout the state, you can make the most of our holiday by opting to hire a car in Maine. After all, the landscape itself is one of the major attractions of the state, and having your own car is the best way to see as much of it at your leisure. There are plenty of car hire companies, and your best bet is to have a good look around online first as many offer discounts if you book in advance.

There are no end of hotels in the USA to choose between, and Maine offers a plethora of options. The many state parks are perfect for camping, and there are also plenty of rustic cottages and cabins available for the quintessential Maine experience. Of course, there also plenty of cheap motels and hotels in Maine, so do look online for the best deals.

Maine is famed for its seafood, particularly lobster, crab and other shellfish, and the sheer abundance means you don't necessarily have to spend a lot of money to feast on these delicacies. There's no need to go for the more upmarket fine dining restaurants when you can spend much less at the more humble, family-run seafood restaurants that are scattered across the famous coastline. Similarly, you can save a bundle by making country hikes and wildlife watching your main activities: when you're in a state this lovely to look at, it would be a shame not to!
