Maldives
Hot SpotsThe Maldives are comprised of 26 atolls, which are groups of islands that surround a lagoon. Of these, only 10 are open to tourists. Most tourist atolls are to the centre of the island chain, clustered near the capital, Male.
North and South Male Atoll (Kafuu)
This is the most popular atoll with lots of holiday resorts. The main activities are snorkelling and diving, and visiting the capital, Male, where you can see the Friday Mosque, the Maldives Fish Market as well as the National Museum in the former Sultan's Palace and the Esjehi Art Gallery.
Alifu Atoll (Ari)
The second most popular group of islands is known for its excellent reefs and so is popular with divers and snorkellers. Sand bars mean that you can walk between some of the islands! Other popular activities are visiting the spa to relax even more, and looking for fruit bats at night.
Seenu Atoll (Addu)
The furthest south of the Maldive atolls, this area used to be an air base and so has an airport which is great for easy transfers. It's the most populated atoll after Kafuu although it doesn't have as many resorts. The reefs are excellent and attract divers as well as scientists who study the biodiversity. Demon point can be used for drift diving and the wreck of British Loyalty adds to the great things to see.
Northern Atolls
Lhaviyani, Baa and Raa comprise the northern atolls. The pick of the bunch is Naifaru in the Lhaviyani atoll known for its cultural diversity combining Islam with Bhuddism and Christianity on a gorgeous island. This is a very popular family holiday destination.
Southern Atolls
The southern atolls are Vaavu, Feemu, Meemu and Dhaalu. Vaavu contains the quintessentially perfect desert island of Thinadoo whilst Dhaalu is home to Khudahuvadhoo, where the diving centre is located so if you're a beginner diver staying near here is a good plan.
