Travel to Melbourne

There are flights to Melbourne from a surprisingly large number of airports from the UK, and with Melbourne one of the cheaper destinations to fly to in Australia you might just get a bargain. For the best deal, be flexible on departure point, date and duration of travel too, and book as early as possible if you want to go at peak times. The flight time is slightly upwards of 20 hours and a stopover or a transfer will be required along the way, often in Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong.

Melbourne Airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport, is situated out to the north of the city, and the Melbourne is also served by a second airport further out, Avalon Airport, which accepts domestic flights if you're heading to Melbourne from another Australian destination.

Trams serve the central regions and head out to the suburbs, where trains are also operating. Buses fill in the gaps, and all modes can be used on the same ticket which makes things nice and easy. Boat trips along the Yarra River are also popular, and taxis are available if you want to make a quick dash! You should hire a car in Melbourne if you want to get out of the city and explore the surrounding winelands.

Travelling further afield

The fastest way to get around Australia is by booking an internal flight, but if you want to explore more along the way there are plenty more options. Hiring a car will give you the freedom to decide your own schedule, or get someone else to drive by taking the intercity bus, with plenty of destinations across Victoria and the country to choose from. Trains also run the length of the country, with Sydney and Adelaide the most popular destinations. Alternatively, head to the leafy island of Tasmania by ferry to see another side to life in Australia.
