When to go to

Melbourne

Melbourne Weather

Melbourne's weather can be changeable, and the city has gained a reputation for being a place where you can experience all four seasons in one day. But this is nothing that a Brit can't handle, and indeed the temperatures are generally a lot warmer than in the UK so the odd flash shower shouldn't be too dispiriting. Summer temperatures average about 25°C and winter highs of around 14°C mean that the weather isn't unpleasantly cold at any time of the year. Rain can be expected all year round, and is slightly more common in the winter months but remember to take a jacket and you'll be fine!

Melbourne's Tourist Season

Christmas holidays are the most popular time to holiday in Melbourne as the sun-starved residents of the UK along with much of the rest of the northern hemisphere search out some warmth for the festive season. Summer in general is the most popular time to visit, with Melbourne often packed out for sporting events as well. Visit in spring or autumn to get a better deal on Melbourne flights and accommodation and still catch some of the summer buzz. As Melbourne is a city destination, it's great to visit year-round so heading in during the winter will mean even better prices as well as a lot more space at the attractions.

Events in Melbourne

The year kicks off in style with the Australian Open in January bringing the biggest names in tennis to Melbourne, and the sports continue in February with the Audi Victoria Week, the country's biggest sailing regatta. Party enthusiasts will love the Midsumma Festival, a gay and lesbian event that runs for a couple of weeks in February, and music lovers will want to enjoy the free St. Kilda Music Festival. March brings the Australian Grand Prix as well as Melbourne Fashion Festival, and the cultural events continue into winter with the International Film Festival and the Melbourne Writers Festival. The Southbank also gets turned into a winter wonderland. Springtime brings horseracing to the city with the Spring Racing Carnival and the Melbourne Cup which brings the country to a halt as all eyes are glued to the TV.
