The Netherlands may conjure up images of tulips and clogs but a Netherlands holiday will offer much more than that. Amsterdam is perfect for an action-packed city break while Maastricht, which claims to be the oldest city in the Netherlands, is a foodie paradise with an amazing selection of cuisine. For the party animals a trip to the lively student town of Groningen is in order and if you prefer to spend your Netherlands holidays in the fresh air, the island of Texel offers the chance to take part in cycling, swimming, walking and horse riding.
If you arrive at Schiphol Airport, the biggest international airport in the Netherlands, it's worth using the train station located underground to reach your final destination. Taxis can be an expensive way of transport so try and stick to the trains if you're on a budget. If you are using taxis, look out for those with a blue number plate as others may be illegal.
The Netherlands is well known for having an impressive public transport system with virtually any part of the country accessible by train, bus, tram, lightrail and metro. For tourists it's worth purchasing a Disposable OV-chipkaart - a travelcard available in a variety of forms such as a three day pass on all public transport, perfect for traveling around the cities. However this can work out quite expensive if you only use it a few times so make sure you get your money's worth. If you only plan to use public transport once or twice during your stay in the Netherlands buy single tickets instead.
The Netherlands is the perfect place to visit if you're on a budget as you can get some amazing deals on cheap Netherlands hotels if you book well in advance.
If you're flying into Amsterdam it may be worth buying the Amsterdam All in 1 Travel Ticket which includes the return train from Schiphol Airport to the city and the choice of either 24, 38, 72 or 96 hours of unlimited travel within Amsterdam and its vicinity. Well worth it if you're planning on cramming lots of sightseeing into your Netherlands holiday!
Eating out all the time can work out expensive so make a trip to the local supermarket to buy a picnic and take it to one of the many beautiful parks all over the country. Sit back, relax and enjoy the scenery during your Netherlands holiday!
