Portugal has been a member of the Euro since 2002. ATMs are widely available and most major cards are accepted. First time visitors to Portugal are often pleasantly surprised by how far their money goes relative to other west European countries.

Language:

Portuguese is the national language of Portugal. It has many similarities with Spanish and speakers of the latter will be able to make themselves understood. English is taught in schools meaning that most people in urban centres will have some sort of rudimentary grasp of the language. Don't expect this to be the case in the more rural villages though.
