Travel to Sicily

With so much history and culture you'll never be bored during a Sicily holiday. The capital of Palermo is full to the brim of amazing sights to be seen while the Roman mosaics at Villa Casale are worth a visit – don't miss the impressive hunting scene. Take a tour to the active volcano of Mount Etna but if you wish to climb it you must visit during the warmer months. The student town of Catania has a busy nightlife but if you're looking to relax take a trip to picturesque Aegadian Islands just off the coast.

Direct flights to Sicily are available from London Stansted Airport and London Gatwick Airport with budget airlines Ryanair and easyJet arriving in Palermo Airport - located 35 kilometres away from the capital of Palermo. In addition to this, British Airways, easyJet and Thomson Flights offer direct flights to Catania-Fontanarossa Airport ? located just over four kilometres southwest of Catania from London Gatwick Airport and Manchester Airport. Indirect flights are available from most other UK airports but they can work out much more expensive.

The island is well served by buses - you can normally purchase tickets for buses from ticket booths, tobacco shops or newspaper kiosks. Tickets for city buses must be purchased and validated before you board otherwise you can risk receiving a fine.

You'll be able to take advantage of the stunning mountain views if you look into car hire in Sicily. In order to get the best deal make sure that you book well in advance and shop around online.

If you're looking to find a cheap hotel in Sicily it's best to book well in advance – this way you'll save valuable money. Sicily has its peak season between June and September so prices for accommodation during these months can be expensive. Instead plan your holiday in Sicily for April, May or October – the weather will still be pleasant but you'll make some great savings. You'll also have much more room to relax on the beach!

If you wish to travel by train to see the sights try to do it on a Saturday. Trenitalia trains have a special deal where you can purchase one standard fare and it'll be valid for two people! It can be used in both first and second class. Make sure you book in advance as the number of seats available are limited.
