On arrival in South Africa

Transport links from South African airports are fairly minimal, although there are several private companies that offer bookable shuttle bus services from airports to cities, towns and parks. Johannesburg Airport is on the railway line and the local bus service in Cape Town covers the airport as well. For most, hiring a car is the simplest way to get to their accommodation and start their holiday.

Getting around South Africa

The major South African towns have some public transport options although they might not be readily apparent. Taxi-style buses are quite common and offer lifts to several passengers at one time, whilst larger cities have a more formal bus network as well as a small rail network. To see more than one city, it's easy to travel between them on intercity trains or coaches, or internal flights are also popular. Hiring a car is a great way to see more on your travels but the roads can get a little hectic with driving rules treated more as a guideline than the law!
