If you're after an authentic African experience, then book yourself a hotel in Togo. Bordering Ghana, Togo's capital city is Lomé, which is known for its incredible street markets (parts of which sell fascinating voodoo fetishes, like mummified crocodiles!) and many nightclubs. Lake Togo is a great destination for water sports and boat rides, while anyone wanting to really immerse themselves in the culture and beauty of the area should head for Koutammouko, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site in the northern part of the country.
British Airways, KLM and Air France are among the airlines which offer indirect flights to Togo from a number of UK airports including Cardiff, London Heathrow and Glasgow International. Lomé-Tokoin Airport is where you will disembark, which is very convenient in terms of access to the capital city. Buses are widely available, while another option is to squeeze yourself into a shared taxiit's all part of the Togo experience! Shared taxis can take you between towns, and if you don't fancy a cramped ride then you can always offer to pay for the whole taxi (it's best to ask a local what the current going rate is, to avoid being over-charged). Private taxis are plentiful in cities like Lomé. It's always worth clarifying the exact fare before beginning your journey. At night time, tourists are advised to stay safe by getting around by private taxis (preferably booked using recommended companies), especially in the capital city of Lomé.
Whether you're after a resort with a pool or a more humble inn, be sure to have a good look around online to find a good deal on hotels in Togo.
As with many exotic locations, you can always save money on food and drink by avoiding any swanky, Westernised tourist spots and going where the locals go. When on holiday in Togo you've got to try classic West African dishes like fufu, which is made from yams and is sold in restaurants, cafes and street stalls. Be sure to slather on some sauces too! If you've never tried plantains (those banana-type things) then be sure to have a taste of them in Togo, where they're sold in a variety of waysfrom mashed to grilled to fried. These kinds of foods are very cheap and will give you a proper taste of Africa.
