Venice
Travel to Venice
There are plenty of UK airports offering flights to Venice and also plenty of airlines driving the prices down so it's possible to get a bargain if you're flexible on travel dates. The nearest airport to Venice is Venezia Marco Polo, but Venice Treviso (Antonio Cavona Airport) is also reasonably close too.
On arrival in Venice
Both airports offer bus connections to the Piazzale Roma in Venice, known as the world's biggest car park as vehicles cannot travel any further into Venice so they all have to stop there. This is a pretty central location near the main train station. From Marco Polo Airport, you can also arrive in Venice by boat with several different services available as well as a water taxi rank for your own private transport.
Getting around Venice
Venice is great to see on foot as it is nice and compact, and getting lost is reputed to be one of the best things you can do! To get around a little faster or get to a different island try the Vaporetti, the waterbuses, which have a range of services covering all the islands. Day passes make this a cheap way to get about. If you want to splash out you can also hire water taxis, and of course Venice's famous gondolas ply the smaller canals.
Travelling further afield
If you're looking to take a tour of the region then you can pick up car hire in Venice at the Piazzale Roma. Trains depart from Santa Lucia Station for destinations across Europe including direct services to Paris, Ljubljana and Zagreb. You can also continue to travel on water with ferries to Greece available from the Stazione Marittima on the west of the main island.
