Corniche

The Corniche is the strip that runs along the shore line and a showcase to Abu Dhabi's rising modern skyline. In the winter its a great place to walk, eat, people watch and hit the beach.

Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan mosque

posted by hnewton on 23 August 2010 at 13:15

The Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan al Nahyan mosque is the 3rd largest in the world. It's utterly magnificent with hundreds of little white domes and some enormous minarets. The inside is exquisitely decorated with artwork, chandeliers and lots and lots of gold. There is also the world's largest carpet inside! Unlike a lot of mosques in the peninsula, it's open to non Muslims before noon (except Fridays) and you can get a guided tour daily at 10 am.

National Auto Museum

posted by lpfeifer on 23 August 2010 at 13:03

The Abu Dhabi National Auto Museum is down right weird. It's housed inside a pyramid shaped structure and is testament to the Sheikh's very expensive hobby of car collecting. Noteworthy is the World's largest mobile home, an old american police car, an airplane and a Dodge Power Wagon with a fully furnished apartment inside!

Liwa

posted by vludwig on 23 August 2010 at 12:57

Liwa is a beautiful area of desert abot 150km outside Abu Dhabi. It sits just on the edge of the Empty Quarter which must be one of the most inhospitable places on the planet. If you can go there during the Liwa festival, its an incredible experience and has off road car racing as well as camel racing. The rest of the year its a great spot to enjoy the tranquility of the desert, see the stars and check out the traditional way of life that has existed around date farming for centuries now.
