Really intersting district great for a wander when you fancy doing something but don't want to spend lots of time or money! Casa de los Puche is the oldest house in Almeria and the Casa de las Mariposas (butterflies) and Don Francisco Jover y Tovar archive centre are both interesting too.

The Alcazaba is an amazing sight and as a bonus is free to EU residents, so you just have to remember to take some form of ID with you. It was built by the 10th century Muslim Caliph from Sandstone and many of the towers, baths and dungeons are still largely in tact. There are beautiful brightly coloured flowers growing all over the fort which makes it all the more impressive.

You'd be forgiven for mistaking this cathedral for a small fortress, it was heavily fortified as it was often a target of pirate raids. Inside the gothic ceiling is impressive and the mix of architectural styles adds to the richness rather than looking messy. Well worth a visit.

For some real history don't niss out on going to mojacar. The archirtecture is old and varied and the moorish fountain is one of the centrepieces, the whitewashed buildings are lovely. The food is great there too!
