Alanya Museum

The museum and ruins are totally fascinating! I somehow had never thought that Turkey was so central to all the great dynasties but it was!! So much to see and learn!

City Walls/Hadrians Gate

posted by qnewton on 3 February 2011 at 09:51

I can't really imagine what it was like to live in a time when cities were walled in for protection, but you can see the might that was needed to invade whan you stand at the huge Hadrian's gate and see the walls! Great to get some history of the place rather than just sunbathe and party (plenty of that too though!!).

Antalya Museum

My wife and I were visiting some important archaelolgical sights in Turkey for our holidays and I have to say that this museum was one of the highlights. The roman sculptures and the sarcophagi were amongst the most delightful and unexpected joys!

Perge

The ancient city of Perge is really close and there are day trips you can take to get to it for some culture if you fancy a day away from sunbathing (unthinkable i know but i can happen!). There's ruins there and plenty of thing to do so you won't be bored.

Kocain Magarasi Caves

It takes a bit of effort to get there (30 mile drive plus 2 hour walk) but the caves are great. There's evidence of early settlements, and the guide there told us they have been used since prehistoric times. Truly amazing place and something that has really stuck in my mind since I got back.
