For me, it's a toss up between Cairo's Egyptian Museum and this one for the best museum of ancient artefacts. I love the sculptures, frescoes and all the small details that really help to make Athenian life come alive.

Lots of people miss the Thision in a whistle stop tour of Athens which seems to lust involve the Parthenon and National Museum. However, it is a really important place, an easy place to visit and in much better condition that most of the other ancient remains in Athens. It is the Temple of Hephaistos and visible from the Parthenon in the old Agora part of town.

One of the largest museums in the world, the National Archaeological Museum houses some of the greatest artifacts from Greek antiquity worldwide. The museum houses more than 20,000 exhibits dating from the beginnings of Prehistory to Late Antiquity. Thousands of visitors flow through the doors each year, and are amazed at the rare collections of pottery, jewelry, ancient statues, weapons and utensils. There is also an extensive collection of photographs. The museum is in the central part of the city, so it is easily accessible from most major hotels and tourist areas. This should be a stop on anyone's itinerary when in Athens.
