These free botanical gardens are the perfect place to while away a sunny afternoon in Bordeaux. There are four regions within the gardens -the water garden, the gallery, the trail and the greenhouses. The gardens are well maintained and in the sunshine an idyllic spot for a picnic and a glass of local wine. We were impressed at the level of horticultural research being carried out in the garden's greehouses.

This hotel was spot on for a short break to Bordeaux. It is right on the main sqaure and has an underground car park so if you have hired a car, you can park it there which leaves you with the freedom to enjoy more of the local, delicious red wine! It's nothing glamourous but perfect for city centre location.

The Basilica Tower, just 500m south of the Palais Gallien is a flamboyant Gothic church, certainly worth having a look at. Built around the 14th century, the pulpit represents St Michael slaying the dragon and the belfry is 114 metres high offering some of the best views of the city. There are various markets that are held close to the church. There is a clothes market that is held every Monday morning on the square. Two other large markets are held including a quirky antiques one which we really enjoyed.

The Cruiseur Colbert is a French naval history museum set on a former commissioned ship. There are original photos and models with enough printed history for a self guided tour. Give yourself at least a couple hours to see everything this museum has to offer. The ship is full of stairs and not handicap friendly.
