School Mosaic

posted by gjolce on 18 May 2011 at 09:58

I'm not quite sure why, but my personal highlight on the freedom trail (a MUST do) was the folk-art mosaic that denoted the place where the first public school in the USA used to stand. Great story, and such a lovely and memorable piece of public art.

Freedom Trail

If you only do one thing when you go to Boston, then it has to be this, it has everything: historical interest, human stories, a great walk, parks, you simply have to do this! We joined a public tour, but I guess you could also forge ahead alone.

African Meeting House

The oldest black church, it's pretty exciting to be in such an historical place! Don't miss out on the excellent Museum of Afro American History as well, or head off on the Freedom Trail to see more of Boston's attractions on the African-American community.

Ether Dome

The location of the first public demonstration of the medical benefits of inhaling ether before surgery (patient, obviously, not doctor) is pretty stunning too. Today a conference hall it's free to look round and there's a painting of the first demonstration as well as other medical curios too.

Basketball Hall of Fame

This is a good afternoon out. AS you walk in there's a massive court with loads of balls and lots of different basketball hoops from through the ages. Upstairs, the museum continues with exhibits charting the history of the game and the evolution of the equipment used.
