You're unlikely to miss this site on a trip to Brussels as it lies at the very heart of the city. It is flanked by the breadhouse and the town hall and is simply the most beautiful town square in Brussels . Victor Hugo agreed with me on that front. the breadhouse is also the home of the city museum which is definitely worth a visit.

This is a lovely tradition in Brussels and well worth trying to coincide a visit with. The main square is covered in a carpet of begonias laid out in patterns which are apparently different every year. You can see the carpet from a number of different elevated viewpoints around the square.

The Brussels Hotel de Ville is the most immediately recognisable building in Brussels. its tower is almost 100 metres high which for a 15th century gothic structure is really impressive. Lit up at night its especially awe inspiring. The interior is largely neo gothic after fire gutted the original interior in the 17th century. Definitely worth a visit.

The Hotel Tassel is known to be the first building designed in the art nouveau style. Its quite astonishing really as pretty much every element of the building is an innovation. Perhaps the most impressive element of the building is the grand golden staircase which is known for its whiplash patterning which became central to art nouveau across the continent.
