The Northern Cemmetery is a estament to the incredible poverty and overcrowding of Cairo. Here people live and eek out a living amongst the tombs. It's quite incredible to explore and notably, much quiter than the rest of the city. It also must rank as one of the safest slums to wander around in in Africa. Though do take precautions anyway.

Designed by both Japanese and Egyptian architects, the fusion of styles has given rise to a masterpiece of Islamic design like no other. There is also a museum and a library to explore.

This mosque is absolutely vast and perches magnificently over the city. It's incredible-especially at sunset. There are Dervish performances for toursits near the mosque which are energetic and fascinating
