WARNING! Fruit and veg

posted by kelless on 11 January 2011 at 12:48

Thought I better warn people about the perils of fruit and veg markets in Cairo. They may look pretty but the potential stomach upsets that they can cause certainly aren't! To keep the fruit looking fresh and appetizing, many of the stalls will douse their fruit and veg with water. I can assure you that they don't use mineral water and just as you wouldn't drink tap water, you really shouldn't eat fruit that has been doused in it. Of course all fruit with a skin is fine but don't have apples or grapes or anything like that, I survived the experience but wouldn't care to repeat it.

Kushwari

This is that rare thing - dirt cheap street food that you would eat out of choice rather than financial neccessity. It's a delicious mix or rice, pasta and pulses with a variety of sauces. It costs about 10p and comes inmassive portions. I could have eaten this pretty much every night that I was in Cairo, especially given that there's always a Kushwari diner around the corner.

Khan el Khalil

This is the main market place of Cairo and whilst a popular tourist destination is very traditional- you should dress and act with modesty. Its really fascinating to see how the market life works and the plentitude of food, clothes and spices on sale.
