Old Cairo

Such a fascinating place! Still partially walled-in this small area was the Roman foothold in Babylon, and formed the heart of the christian community of that era. Within a small stretch you can see the oldest Christian place of worship in Cairo, the first mosque in Egypt and the oldest synagogue too. Amazing.

Egyptian Museum

posted by jdryfus on 11 January 2011 at 12:21

Having visited the Louvre and the British Museum, I found it hard to believe that there could be anything left in Egypt from the Pharonic period. I was surprised, then to find that there were more sarcophagi, scarabs and sculptures in the Museum than there was possibly space to accomodate, stuff was falling out of cupboards and stacked three- deep on shelves. Still, wonderful and worth seeing.

Memphis

Memphis is almost worth seeing for the paucity of its archaeological remains. It's quite incredible that this was once the capital of Egypt and is now the site of a modest settlement and a few pharaonic remains. It's only 25km from Cairo and you can get there in a tour bus.

The Egyptian Museum

Situated in the Tahrir square in Cairo and dating back to 1897. The ground floor there are the huge statues. The upper floor houses small statues, jewels, Tutankhamon treasures and the mummies. It is a fantastic museum.
