I had no idea Cancun was going to be so great for shopping, else i'd have left more space in my suitcase! Punta Cancun is like shopping heaven with huge malls, but if you're after more local stuff then head to the craft markets by the convention centre on avendida tulum. It's fairly pricy in the malls but then there's stuff you can't get at home so it's worth it for the novelty.

Playa del carmen

You might come to find Cancun a little bit too much after a while. It certainly is rather hectic touristy and commercial. Playa del Carmen is a great remedy. It's not exactly 'local' and most of the shops are still tourist shops but there aren't any high rises here and none of the big chains of diners.
