University of Cork

posted by rclark on 10 August 2010 at 15:37

The University of Cork was founded as recently as 1845 but it feels much older.I suppose that this is the desired effect, to make it seem more like an Irish Oxford. The architecture is largely Victorian Gothic and tudor but there are a few impressive modern buildings too. Its also possible to attend some lectures and concerts at the college.

st Anne's Church

posted by jbeard on 10 August 2010 at 15:27

Most people visit the church of st Anne to ring the famous bells of Shandon. We had a go and it was good fun, we also got to climb to the top of the Shandon tower where there is an incredible view out over the city. The church interior is maybe a slight anti-climax as it is quite plain, but the stained glass windows are very pretty and the light that they cast on the rest of the church is very effective.

Blarney Castle

This is a beautiful ruin of a castle not far from Cork. It is set within several acres of beautiful garden and is very overgrown inside, quite a romantic effect. You can kiss the 'stone of eloquence' inside which involves hanging backwards over a sheer drop!

St Finbarre's Cathedral

posted by qjohns on 10 August 2010 at 14:31

St Finbarre's Cathedral is one of the grandest sights in Cork with three elegant towers. Suprisingly its a Victorian structure as it looks for all the world like a Gothic cathedral. The Interior is very beautiful and the organ is fairly famous I think.

Church of St. Anne Shandon

posted by triplecrown on 2 June 2009 at 06:34

This is a beautiful old church built in the early 1700s. It has several wonderful bells in the tower, that you can pay a small fee to ring yourself. It is a great view from the tower.
