Great for an informal day's sightseeing as the kids can all dash off around the castle and pretend they are in a battle and the adults can enjoy the place at a slightle less frenetic pace! Amazing castle and splendid gardens, all at a very reasonable price!

As the Queen's official Scottish residence we didn't think we'd get to see any of it, and although i'm sure we didn't see vast sections, the tour was pretty great. Lovely gardens too, perfect for afternoon tea!

My boyfriend and I totally loved this castle, left just as it was by the last owner, Mrs Reid. The interior is gorgeous, with lots of italian furniture and cabinets made by her husband, the owner of a a famous factory in Edinburgh. But it doesn't end there, outside the Japanese friendship garden is the highlight but it's all lovely.

There is more to see here than you can really do in one day, but we gave it a go. It is a beautiful place to wander and enjoy the various native plants as well as species from around the world. The glasshouses were of particular interest and beautiful from the outside as well.
