Along with Armstrongs, rusty Zip flies the vintage flag in Edinburgh as well as clothing half its student population. Eclectic is the order of the day with hipster, smart and fancy dress receiving a fairly equal waiting. You'll have to rummage hard but there are some real bargains here if you can find them.

Greatest vintage shop in the UK? It certainly gets my vote. Armstrong's specialises in retro trends, fancy dress and second hand tartan, black tie and wedding atire. They do an especially fine line in 70s rock band t shirts and old Barbour jackets. Great prices too.

This area was a little village isolated from the city of Edinburgh before the new town was constructed. It still has the feeling of being an independent community. It's a really sweet little street running steeply down the hill with some nice little cafes and shops. Look out for the Barony pub too which is my favourite pub in Edinburgh and starred in the recent film - the illusionist.

First the street itself is not named the Royal Mile but actually several streets connected (Castlehill, Lawnmarket, High Street and Canongate). To do it from beginning to end is a little over a mile and a half not including all the stopping along the way. You start at Edinburgh Castle and make your way to Holyroodhouse. The shop keepers are warm and helpful, the restaurants and pubs are inviting. It is a nice way to get the feel for Edinburgh. Then go back on following days to the places that needed more exploring.
