Praia do Faro

posted by hfisher on 29 June 2011 at 09:13

I knew the Algarve was famed for beaches but I was unbelievably pleased to find such an amazing beach right on our doorstep. It was lovely to have to lagoon there too as it's much better for the kids than the sea.

Ilha do Faro, just south of the town

Praia do Faro

My sister and our families spent a very happy week mostly camped out on this beach, and swimming in the sea. It's lovely, plenty of space and you can let the kids run off and still see them, giving them freedom and you some sense of control!

where, when, how, web
You can get the airport bus there but with a whole load of you a car is just more practical

Portimao Beach

posted by dhill on 1 December 2010 at 09:26

My mates and I were surfing the Algarve beaches and Portimao was our favourite, great swell, consistent peel and the conditions there were pretty good most days, although of course we had to go round and check out some others too!

where, when, how, web
quite a journey west of faro but you've gotta go where the surf is right?

Monte Gordo

posted by mwylie on 1 December 2010 at 09:25

My boyfriend and I went on a day trip to this lovely village and beach. Would advise going into Vila Real de Santo Antonio as well, our lunch there in the old fishing town was delicious. Monte Gordo is lovely and the beach is huge, you'll definitely get some peace and quiet there and plenty of space too.

where, when, how, web
Along the coast east of Faro, you can get there on the rail i think or we drove.

Ilha de Baretta

posted by bhincken on 28 October 2010 at 15:55

This is the closest beach to Faro and it's always been quite quiet when i've visited. A lovely peaceful place with warm wter and nice sand, but not many amenities there so make sure you take everything you need for the day.

where, when, how, web
take the boat from the porta nova pier
