The Esplenadi is really the centre of Helsinki in the summer months when the whole town empties out onto the grass to enjoy the concerts, cafes and food stalls here. The Esplenadi is made up of two areas of very well kept garden with a few nice little statues dotted around.

This church is carved down into the granite and domed with glass and copper. Its a very simple idea but very beautiful too and on a sunny day is very bright and beautiful. There is an impressive organ inside and the great acoustics make this a great place to go to see a concert if there are any on during your stay in Helsinki.

You can take a ferry from the Helsinki harbour to the Suomenlina Island. Its a great day out and there's lots to see and do. There's a massive fortress which is rich in history from Russian and Swedish wars. There's a museum there too with plenty of maps and artefacts which is very educational. Parts of the shipyard are still functioning and the beached submarine is not to be missed.

This is the main market square of Helsinki. It is in a beautiful location by the Esplandi and sells a very diverse range of products including food, drinks and plenty of souveneirs. A lot of people I spoke to found the Kauppatori to be excessively touristy but I don't think it is at all. Some of the Finnish food is amazing Gravadlax and meat pies especially. Whilst you're there, be sure to head to the Vahna Kauppahalli covered market which has a very traditional feel to it with little wooden booths where vendors ply their trade.
