Houston Zoo is a vast place and houses nearly 4000 animals, we spent about 5 hours insidse and left because we got tired rather than becasue we'd seen everything. Amongst the highlights for me were seeing Asian elephants, Komodo dragons and the vast reptile house. The children's zoo is a lovely touch and is a place where children can go to pet tame animals.

This is one of those obligatory photo stop points in Houston but really it is worth a visit on its own merit. Its a lovely semi circular structure with a continuous sheet of water falling down it to hit the steps below. A really nice place to cool off.

The San Jacinto monument commemorates the spot at which Texas won independence from Mexico. The monument is the pride of the state and can be ascended in high speed elevator. At the top is a single star on a observation deck 570 feet above the ground.

Pretty much a must see for anyone visiting Houston, this is a really great day out and if you're old enough to remember the lunar landings, especially significant. The mission control centre was a highlight for me but there are also some really interesting exhibits on life in a shuttle as well as lots of interactive learning for kids.
