Wayang Museum

posted by ystough on 12 August 2010 at 13:53

The Wayang museum is a museum dedicated entirely to puppets. The tradition comes from the hindu past of the country. This much I managed to gather but a fairly poorly labeled collection means that this is an enjoyable and amusing rather than particularly informative museum.

History Museum

posted by jhunter on 12 August 2010 at 13:49

The History museum is housed in Jakarta's old town hall and is perhaps not as impressive as you might expect. It does however have some very important pieces- the Hindu Batu Tulis engraved stone from the 5th century, a statue of Vishnu and the million year old man of Java. There are a lot of artefacts from the Dutch colonial period too.

Pasar Buku Senen

posted by jmull on 12 August 2010 at 13:40

This is the area of Jakarta where you can buy old and second hand books. Some are even antiques. I found a couple of English novels and some beautiful old Indonesian books which I bought as souvenirs. Its a pretty little district even if you don't buy anything.

Gereja Katedral

posted by rtodd on 12 August 2010 at 13:34

The Gereja Katedral is worth seeing if only because the sight of an enormous imposing gothic cathedral in central Jakarta only a stone's through from a mosque is a weird one. It is neo gothic and has some rather attractive painted steel spires

Maritime Museum

posted by DVC_Chris on 18 September 2009 at 22:38

One of the most interesting museums I have found in Jakarta is the Maritime Museum, which is located in restored warehouses of the Dutch East India Company. There is a great deal of history there, not only about the maritime spice trade that stretches back centuries, but also the history of Jakarta as a whole. It is well worth the visit if you are in the area.
