Botanical Gardens

posted by bhoffhants on 23 August 2010 at 12:26

The Botanical gardens of Kiev are worth visiting especially for the magnificent butterfly house which has a wonderful collection of types of butterflies and moths. The gardens themselves are a lovely spot to relax and go for a quiet stroll and are especially nice in spring.

Bulgakov House

If, like me, you fell in love with the surreal dystopia of Bulgakov's The Master and the Margarita, the Bulgakov House is a must see. It houses the writer's vast collection and lots of his possessions with displays about his life.

ST Sophia's Cathedral

posted by dwillcox on 23 August 2010 at 10:04

St Sophia's Cathedral is named after the Hagi Sofia in Constantinople, and while it can't nearly match the latter in size or splendour, it's still an impreesive building and a Unesco herritage building. It has some beautiful gold teardrop domes and well preserved mosaics and frescoes inside. Most of the surviving cathedral is from the 17th and 18th century though the site dates back to the 11th century.

Maidan Nezdezhnosti

posted by rgleper on 23 August 2010 at 09:58

The Maidan Nezdezhnosti is the central square of Kiev and features some fairly impressive architecture. Literally it means independence square and commemorates the independence from the Soviets. More recently it was site of the 2004 protests against electoral corruption- known as the Orange Revolution.
