posted by jpfeifer on 11 August 2010 at 15:00

The Mercado de Hechiceria is the witches market of La Paz. Its an utterly bizarre experience and really has to be seen to be believed. You can by all sorts of talismans, potions and dried animals. A popular item is the dried Llama foetus which wards off evil spirits!

Valle de la Luna

posted by qmurray on 11 August 2010 at 14:54

Worth a visit if you're in La Paz is the Valle de la Luna which is about 10km out of towm by a village called Mallasa. It's called moon valley for its bizarre rock formations which you begin to get a sense of on the drive down. The valley was formed by thousands of years of erosion and some of the formations of rock in it are really quite extraordinary and have been given names according to the things they resemble. You can see most of the valley inabout an hour's walk.

Museo de la Coca

posted by relder on 11 August 2010 at 14:46

The Museo de la Coca is actually a fascinating place to visit and considering how much of an impact the drug's trade has had on this continent, a very important part of the history of the region. The museum explains the medical history of the plant the use of which has been traced back to 2,500BC. There are also shocking tales of the Spanish feeding it to the Indian workers to make them work longer hours in the mines.

Plaza Murillo

posted by qosteen on 11 August 2010 at 14:39

This is the traditional centre of La Paz and is a very attractive square. It is surrounded by some beautiful buildings- The Cathedral, Presidential Palace and Congress. Its a lovely spot in the late afternoon when people tend to congregate here and is a good place to head for dinner as there are plenty of restaurants around.
