What a majestic place, somewhere you can really see the riches and the impression it must have made on the average commoner! Just stunning architecture, allow plenty of time to look around.

Just outside the Jeronomidis Monastery, these two make for a great cultural morning (or afternoon). The tower is the most famous landmark in the city so you should get your obligatory snaps in and soak up the atmosphere here.

Jeronimos Monastery, located in the Belem district of Lisbon is now being declared as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. It is one of the top 10 tourists place of Lisbon. This Monastery was being built by King Manuel I in 1502. In commemoration of Vasco Da Gama's voyage and to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for its success this Monastry was being built. It is one of the most prominenet monument in Lisbon. Vasco da gama & other great figures of Portuguese are entombed here.

The Jeronimos Monastery provides visitors to Lisbon with five centuries of history, dating back to 1496 and King Manual I. It is definitely on the list of top attractions in the city. This is a great place to visit to get an overall feeling about the history and development of Portugal, and its "Age of Discovery." The church is magnificent and opulent and there is beautiful statuary all around. Be prepared to spend several hours here, as there is much to see and do and quite a bit to take in. Take a guided tour: the guides are very informative. I do not recommend this for young children (they will be bored) but if your children are over the age of 14, they should appreciate the art and history of this attraction. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as you will be climbing up and down a lot of steps. I personally love old churches and related artifacts, so this was a perfect place to visit.
