My boyfriend and I love to get to know cities by walking around and building-gazing. This was our favourite place to walk down and see all the awesome things there. The buildings are so lavish, almost ridiculouly so, as if trying to outdo each other, making for a grand spectacle.

Basically it's from Plaza de Cibeles (or nearly) to Plaza de Espana

Temple of Debod

In the 70s, the Egyptians had to call on the help of the Spanish government to cope with the problems caused by the flooding of the Nile. As a thank you gift for the Spanish help, they built this 4th century BC temple in Madrid which was demolished, transported and then reconstructed stone by stone in a pretty park in the centre of town. Its a curious sight and really worth a visit.

Palacio Real

Wow. This is one grand building. As soon as you see it you can't help but be amazed by the size of it, and then when you tour the rooms the luxury is so apparent it really makes you think wow these people are rich. Amazing to see how the other half live, i think i enjoyed it even more than the napoleonic apartments at the louvre!

Banco de Espana

Requires a bit of organisation as you have to write beforehand to gain entry but on the plus side it's so quiet in this haven. Glorious architecture and fabulous artwork on display this really is a hidden gem right in the middle of the city.
